The 8th IILM Distinguished Global Thinker Award was conferred on Professor Soumitra Dutta, Anne and Elmer Lindseth Dean and Professor of Management, Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management, at a ceremony on Monday March 31, 2014. The award instituted by IILM was given to Professor Soumitra Dutta for his significant contributions to academics, application of technology for the business world, and on strategies for driving growth and innovation by embracing the digital economy.

In the past years, IILM has conferred the Global Thinker Award on Lord Bhikhu Parekh, Mr. Sam Pitroda, Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, Professor C.K. Prahalad, Lord Meghnad Desai, Dr. Shashi Tharoor and Prof. Andre Beteille. The 2013 Award was presented to Mr. Sam Pitroda; the event was chaired by Dr. Shashi Tharoor.
Professor Soumitra Dutta is the 11th Dean and Professor of Management and Organization at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. Prior to taking over this position professor Dutta was the Roland Berger Professor of Business and Technology and Founder and Academic Director of ELab at INSEAD, Paris. His responsibilities at INSEAD also included Dean of External Relations; Dean of Executive Education; and Dean of Technology and e-Learning. Professor Dutta is an authority on impact of new technology on business world, especially social media and social networking, on strategies for driving growth and innovation. He is the co-editor and author respectively of two influential reports in Technology and Innovation- the Global information Technology Report (co-published with the World Economic Forum) and the Global Innovation Index. His works have been published in the Harvard Business Review, European Management Journal, Management Science, IEEE Transaction on Engineering Management, Decision Support System.
He is one of the very few faculty members around the world and across all disciplines who has been invited to Davos for more than 10 years. He is amongst the very few academics in the privileged "Davos Circle"
While accepting his award Prof. Soumitra Dutta, shared his views around innovation referring to 3 ideas - desperation vs inspiration, efficiency vs creativity and reality vs dreams. Prof Dutta bought in experiences to illustrate how some of the identified themes promote innovation. During the course of the event Prof Soumitra addressed the questions posed by audience.”
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Sapna Popli, Director, IILM mentioned that IILM instituted the Global Thinker Award in 2006 to foster greater engagement with the global academic community as well as to provide a forum for policy debate on issues of international importance. Professor Popli also highlighted the achievement of IILM as the only business school from India to be inducted into a group of 28 higher education institutions in the United Nations Global Compact Principle for Responsible Management Education (PRME) Champions . This leadership group works on planning and implementing the framework of responsible management and leadership education. IILM, together with Babson College, USA and the Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, is co-lead of the faculty development initiative for PRME. IILM is also a member PRME Advisory Group. This group is responsible for formalizing the PRME policy and driving the PRME agenda across schools.
