Facebook Messenger App – Are your mobile contacts Safe?

Yesterday Facebook launched its new and updated Messenger app for Android, Blackberry and iPhone. It’s an updated instant messenger release from Facebook to give tough competition to mobile chat messengers like WhatsApp, Gtalk and MSN or Yahoo messenger. Among these cross platform mobile messengers WhatsApp is very much popular and which Facebook already planning to buy. But what our concern is – are your mobile contacts safe on this new messenger app of Facebook, what we’d also be like to get clarified if someone in Facebook can explain this factor.

Using Messenger app can be done by just entering your name and mobile number. Let’s have a look what can you do with the Facebook Messenger app:
  • Send messages to your friends on their mobile phones
  • Send messages to anyone on your mobile contacts
  • Instant messaging and click away messages
  • Group conversations or Geo-sharing too.
Previously some other social networks had already faced charges of selling user contacts to different companies. So in that scenario we really doubt how your mobile contacts are safe with this new messenger app. As Facebook messenger app says, you can send messages to anyone in your mobile contacts and what our question is “Whether the recipient needs to be a Facebook user, messenger app user or not”. If a non-messenger or non-Facebook user can get messages, then Facebook must have the ability to track such numbers or users who are neither on these. It’s a simple theory, when you send a message on your mobiles or even mails; your mobile carrier or mail host can track the number or email id and the messages too. If the same thing happens with Facebook messenger apps. This way they get to know the numbers of people who are neither active on Facebook or on messenger.

We’re not against innovation or marketing strategies to acquire more audience in which Facebook has always been ahead. What we are concerned about; if this app or any other such app is a back door entry to your mobile contacts then it can be harmful for both the users and Facebook. For the information, this facility is now available for Android devices.

Note: This is not a negative review about Facebook or its products. We’re only concerned about the safety of the users and just making awareness. We give our best wishes to this new app and hope it competes well with others in the market.
